(SSI, PADI. NAUI are the 3 major dive education agencies from USA. They have equivalent standards and are equally recognised and accepted worldwide for diving and continuation of dive training).
Minimal requirement to start this course:
- no medical contraindications (no asthma or any respiratory, or heart or brain conditions, e.g.)
- able to swim without assistance (there will be a simple assessment)
- full fees paid before the start of the course. (refund will be less course of materials issued at the start of the course, and any other costs incurred, like of cost of pool training)
Minimum to start course = 4 students
Maximum in each session in pool or out at sea = 4 per instructor/assoc instructor. ( I will teach all the courses, but will engage an assoc instructor if there is more than 4 students, to a maximum of 6 students for the whole class. This is to ensure attention to students for safety and learning purposes).
Course structure :
3 class room sessions. 2 in singapore, and 1 onsite on the last night for assessment and review. total 8 hours.
2 to 3 pool sessions (saturdays full day)- at river valley pool in Singapore. abt 8-10 hours, depending on student's ability.
4 open sea dives - at Tioman or Batam over a weekend (fri night to sun night)
Students are encouraged to purchase their own mask, fins,belt and suit as these are items requiring personal fit. Rental of these are also available : each item at $5 per day. BCD (buoyancy compensating device - it's the jacket strapped to the tank) and regulators are usually rented at this stage (included into the pool and trip fee), as these cost much more (average S$1200 total for both); all divers are encouraged to purchase their own sets of gear.
Course fees : following is the cost breakdown of of the full fee:
- Student kit = $45.
- $30 per pool session.(includes bcd and reg rental)
- Tioman stay = $300. (twin share, food included, tanks and weights, transport via van and boat transfer)
- Instructor fee = $100
Total $505 (with 2 pool sessions and 1 tioman trip)
Students are encouraged to continue the training until they are confident they meet the course requirements for OWD, i.e. able to dive with buddy with confidence. Extra pool and trip fees will apply.
